Business Facilities Managers: Calibration Questions to Ask Your Thermographer

We're continuing our series on questions to ask your thermographer to ensure you get the best possible service!

What type of infrared cameras do you use?

Infrared cameras are not all the same. Different types of cameras are used for different types of applications. Your thermographer should be able to tell you what kind of camera they use and why it is appropriate for your particular infrared scanning need. For example, what is the maximum distance required for accurate, good resolution readings? How old is the infrared camera? How familiar is your thermographer with his or her thermographic imaging equipment

Do you own, lease, or rent your own infrared equipment?

Infrared equipment is NOT cheap, in fact, it can be very expensive. Some companies purchase their equipment and some companies lease their equipment. The important issue is really whether the cameras are maintained and calibrated, and are fairly new and up to industry standards.

Regular calibration is important because of the sensitivity of infrared equipment. Infrared equipment should be maintained and calibrated regularly to ensure optimum performance. If the equipment is not being calibrated, then the scan results may not be accurate

Next week, we'll take a look at the type of questions you should ask about the infrared reports you will receive as part of your thermographic imaging scan.

I live in the South and I have Ice Dams. What is Wrong With This Picture?

It seems like we are setting records for cold temperatures, ice, and snow this winter! I've been iced in for a couple of days now. The grandkids are having a blast, but I think I've shovelled enough snow for a lifetime already!

I wanted to continue our series about the right questions to ask your thermographer, but under the circumstances (that is, under a ton of snow and ice!), I thought it might be timely to talk a bit about ice dams - what are they, and what do you do about them?

What is an ice dam? Ice dams occur when snow melts near the ridgelines of warm roofs (roofs without adequate ventilation). As the water runs down the roof to the overhang, it cools and freezes. When it gets cold again, any water that may have melted refreezes until you have the equivalent of a giant ice cube sitting on your roof eaves or gutters. While this sounds bad enough, real damage can occur as the ice melts. If the water has nowhere to go, it seeps underneath the shingles of your roof. Now you've got real problems as the water build up continues and damage to your roof can start to occur.

Notice that it occurs when snow melts near ridgelines of warm roofs. What makes a roof warm? If you lack  proper ventilation and insulation in your attic or roof structure, warm spots can form. So if you have ice dams, how can you tell where the warm spots are, and if they are being caused by improper ventilation or missing insulation?

Thermal imaging can be the key to identifying the root causes of ice dams. By performing a thermal scan on your roof, we can see exactly where the warm spots are. By using thermography to scan the corresponding areas on the inside of your building, we can identify why those spots are warmer than they should be.

Next time, we'll be back to developing a list of questions for your certified thermographer. In the meantime - stay warm!

Business Facilities Managers: Important Questions to Ask Your Thermographer!

Happy New Year! I think I miss Christmas cookies already!

Thermal imaging is growing in popularity, and as a result, many new and inexperienced companies are cropping up. I thought that this month, I would talk a little about how to select which thermal imaging professionals you want to work with.

At the most basic level, you want to know your thermographer has gone through training that provides some type of certification. Anyone can operate a camera and come up with thermal images, but do they have the professional training and knowledge to interpret the results?

Certification Questions to Ask:

What level and type of thermographic specific certifications do you hold?

Any method of certification that conforms to ASNT (American Society of Non Destructive Testing) standards is preferred; when thermographers receive formal training, your chances of getting an effective scan are very good.

Do you have a Quality Assurance program?

Technology changes. Ongoing training is necessary for any thermographer to maintain effectiveness. Does your thermographer receive ongoing training? Ask what type of continual training the thermographers receive. The thermographers should mention periodic training and qualification processes monitored by a third party or internal QA (Quality Assurance) division. If not, then caution should be used.

Next week, we'll look at equipment-specific questions you should ask to make sure your thermographers infrared imaging tools work at peak efficiciency.
