Business Facilities Managers: Important Questions to Ask Your Thermographer!

Happy New Year! I think I miss Christmas cookies already!

Thermal imaging is growing in popularity, and as a result, many new and inexperienced companies are cropping up. I thought that this month, I would talk a little about how to select which thermal imaging professionals you want to work with.

At the most basic level, you want to know your thermographer has gone through training that provides some type of certification. Anyone can operate a camera and come up with thermal images, but do they have the professional training and knowledge to interpret the results?

Certification Questions to Ask:

What level and type of thermographic specific certifications do you hold?

Any method of certification that conforms to ASNT (American Society of Non Destructive Testing) standards is preferred; when thermographers receive formal training, your chances of getting an effective scan are very good.

Do you have a Quality Assurance program?

Technology changes. Ongoing training is necessary for any thermographer to maintain effectiveness. Does your thermographer receive ongoing training? Ask what type of continual training the thermographers receive. The thermographers should mention periodic training and qualification processes monitored by a third party or internal QA (Quality Assurance) division. If not, then caution should be used.

Next week, we'll look at equipment-specific questions you should ask to make sure your thermographers infrared imaging tools work at peak efficiciency.
