Infrared Inspections on College Campuses

Came across another In the News item about using infrared inspections as predictive maintenance tools for college campuses: http://www.publicpower.org/newsletters/index.cfm?ItemNumber=11305

On this campus, infrared scans are performed annually with a special focus on the campus boiler plan and on the water system. Infrared scans identified potential programs and allowed the college to schedule preventative maintenance.

And, as we've discussed on this blog before, the insurance company that covers the college views infrared scanning as a preventative tool. Have you called your insurance company to see if you can get a discount if you schedule annual thermographic scans of your buildings? Many commercial insurance companies do provide additional incentives for preventative maintenance programs, including programs with an infrared imaging component!

The Green Initiative: Renovation of Older Buildings and Thermography

I love the old South. The historic brick buildings, the old wood homes with wraparound porches - there's a certain feel of nostalgia that is enchanting. I imagine the electric bills for those buildings are not quite so enchanting (to say nothing of the mold from moisture intrusion from leaky roofs or the the chill in the winter from old, damaged, and missing insulation!).
One of the goals of a pre-renovation inspection is to get a fast, reliable, cost-efficient and objective view of the building's thermal insulation. In order to detect weak points early during the renovation process, a thermal image evaluation allows you to quickly detect insulation faults and avoids expensive damages and loss of energy down the road.
A complete thermographic survey allows you to:
1. Assessing the thermal insulation of old buildings
2. Find and identify existing defects in window casings and joints
3. Find and identify missing or faulty insulation
4. Locate structural issues - missing mortar or bricks
5. Locate areas of moisture instrusion because of problems with the existing roof
Infrared Scanning - an integral part of building renovation!

Going Green: Infrared Scanning and The Green Initiative

Found a great website today - the Green Business Bureau. They have wonderful information about "going green" - and what was super cool was the pop up customer service rep who was eager to assist (you just have to appreciate good customer service!)

Here's what I found fascinating - the CSR didn't know a whole lot about thermal scanning. We chatted about why incorporating infrared imaging into a company's green inititive program makes good business sense:

1.Save money and reduce your company's carbon footprint by having areas where you are losing energy through improper insulation or other issues repaired by qualified contractors.

2. Infrared scanning is environmentally friendly: it's non-invasive, non-destructive, uses no chemicals, and requires no drilling, or other harmful procedures.

3. Sustains the life of your building by detecting latent moisture damage.

Is your company participating in a Green Initiative or trying to get Leeds-certified? Make thermography and infrared scanning a part of your plan.

Infrared Scans of Data Centers -

Why is infrared scanning of your data center important? What do we look for? Well, I'm not going to give the entire farm away (smile), but here are a few areas where it is crucial to conduct an infrared scan to check the health of your data center:

1. Electrical switchgar
2. Uninterruptible Power Supply
3. Automatic Transfer Switches
4. Server Systems
5. Cooling Systems

All of these areas can have irregularities that you can't see.  For example, let's say your data center has rows of server racks. What happens if the hot air isn't circulating correctly and improper cooling occurs? The first time you will know this is probably when your electrical equipment fails.

Early detetction means you can identify and fix any issues before an outage occurs, and before you lose time and money due to equipment failure and personnel downtime (not to mention customer goodwill when your services aren't available!)

P.S. Here's an informational webinar from one our partners about data centers and infrared scanning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqtTWZLXjkE&feature=player_embedded

Infrared Scanning - because what you can't see CAN hurt you.

Thermal Scanning Data Centers in North Carolina

Charlotte, North Carolina is known as one of the largest banking centers of the United States, which means it is also home to lots and lots of data centers. As a matter of fact - Apple's new data center in North Carolina is now visible on Google Earth! (http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/24/local-tv-station-visits-apples-data-center/) Why am I mentioning this in a blog about infrared scanning? Because thermal imaging of a data center infrastructure can provide critical information about your center's health and functioning.

What exactly IS a data center? Simply put, it is a facility that houses crucial computer systems and their related components. For example, every bank has multiple data centers. These data centers house the mainframe computers that contain all the bits and bytes that represent YOUR money (and a whole lot more data). Although data centers are set up to be redundant (if one fails, the redundant data center should immediately and safely resume operations), a good predictive mainentance program helps to ensure failure through preventable incursions doesn't happen.

Thermography in the data center allows you to check for hidden problems before they occur. Next week, we'll take a look at what some of them might be.

Infrared Scanning - it's not just for commercial buildings anymore!
