Heat Transfer and Infrared Thermography

Last week we talked about how one of the functions of infrared radiation is to transfer heat. Heat transfer happens all the time. Have you ever sat down in a chair after someone vacates it? It's nice and warm, isn't it? That's a form of heat transfer. Heat can transfer through conduction, convection, or infrared radiation.

If you've been reading my blog, you'll know that I often say everything gets hot before it fails. It's starting to make a little more sense now, doesn't it? An infrared camera can detect that heat transfer through infrared energy (radiation).

Does this mean you should run out and buy an infrared camera to see if you have any potential heat loss in your building? Only if you are a certified thermographer - and next week we'll talk about why that matters.
