What is a Baseline Thermal Inspection?

A potential client of mine asked me what a baseline thermal inspection is. As it happens, his company is upgrading its predictive maintenance plan and someone suggested a baseline thermal inspection.

"Good question!" I said, (and handed him a business card).

A baseline thermal inspection is when a thermographer captures and overall "thermal map" of whatever you want to inspect (mechanical, roof, electrical, new equipment) and then uses it to compare future inspections against. It's an easy, accurate, and cost-efficient way to see if any changes occur over time. For example, a brand new piece of equipment may function correctly. A thermal infrared scan done six months later, might show increases of heat around a coupling. You might not know this is an abnormality if you didn't have the original baseline thermal inspection pictures.

A certified thermographer will be able to assist you in identitying which areas of your facility or plant need a baseline thermal inspection.
